Adil
Kaouch takes the 1,500m final out quickly, essentially assuring
that his teammate Hicham El Guerrouj (in 2nd) gets the type
of race he wants.
|
Behind
the two Moroccans, it's Bernard Lagat, Reyes Estevez, Driss
Maazouzi, Jose Antonio Redolat, Rui Silva, Gert-Jan Liefers,
Abdelkader Hachlaf, Paul McMullen and Mehdi Baala. |
With
one lap to go, El Guerrouj has taken over the lead, with Lagat
in second and William Chirchir in third. The fast pace has stretched
out the pack. |
After
finishing 2nd in the Sydney Olympic 1,500m final, a race that
he was strongly favored to win, El Guerrouj was determined to
win this one. Sydney winner Noah Ngeny was absent from this
race after Kenyan officials dropped him from the team after
he failed to report to a training camp. |

| After
several years of injury (and losing two toes in a lawnmower
accident) Paul McMullen put himself back on the map this season,
finishing 10th here in 3:39.35. |
El
Guerrouj does a little celebrating after taking a look back
to make sure he has this one in the bag... |
...And
crosses the finish line in 3:30.68. |
Sydney
bronze medallist Lagat moves up one spot here (3:31.10) and
Driss Maazouzi of France is thrilled to sneak in for the bronze
(3:31.54), edging out Chirchir (3:31.91). |

El
Guerrouj later explained to reporters that he was writing
"Thank You" on the track here.

El
Guerrouj gets down. |
More
celebration. |
